    Flagler College creates Hospitality and Tourism Advisory Board

    Flagler College held the inaugural meeting of its Hospitality and Tourism Advisory Board on Monday, Feb. 27. The Board will serve as a link between leaders in the hospitality and tourism industry and Flagler’s new major within the Sport Management Department.

    Director of Florida Public Archaeology Network to discuss archeology as force for social change

    Sarah E. Miller, director of the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) for Northeast and East Central regions, will discuss the power of archaeology in activism, on Tuesday, March 21. Her talk is part of Flagler College’s Community Lecture Series and will take place in the historic Solarium in Ponce Hall. Flagler has hosted FPAN on its campus since 2006.

    Crisp-Ellert Art Museum to screen documentary 'Nightcleaners'

    Selected with curator Rachael Rakes, Crisp-Ellert Art Museum artist-in-residence and curator Staci Bu Shea will host a screening of the 1975 film “Nightcleaners” on Wednesday, March 8 (International Women’s Day) at 6:30 p.m. The screening will be followed by a conversation between Bu Shea and Rakes on the film, feminized labor and consciousness-raising practices and forms. The event will take place in Flagler College’s Kenan Hall, Room 300.

    Poet Dan Albergotti to give talk as part of Writers-in-Residence series

    Acclaimed poet Dan Albergotti will read a selection of poems from his book “Millennial Teeth” during a visit to Flagler College on Thursday, March 2, at 7 p.m. This event was originally scheduled for Oct. 6 of last year, but had to be rescheduled due to Hurricane Matthew.

    Entrepreneurship, networking highlights of college’s ‘Business Week’

    Thirteen students experienced first-hand the intense scrutiny of pitching a business idea last Thursday when they competed in Flagler College’s “Lion’s Cage,” an event based on the popular TV show “Shark Tank.” Four business leaders served as the judges. Senior Jose Mizrahi, who pitched the idea of an “Uber for tutoring” app called Brighter Future, emerged victorious, claiming the top $1,000 prize.

    The Crisp-Ellert Art Museum and Flagler College will present work by New York-based artist Jamie Isenstein, from March 3 to April 15. The exhibition, “Head Space,” kicks off with a walk-through by the artist, at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 3, and will be followed by a reception from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

    Flagler professor’s book takes Silver Medal in Florida Book Awards competition

    A Flagler College professor’s in-depth study of the civil rights movement in northwest Florida has earned him a prestigious 2016 Florida Book Award for his book, titled “Beyond Integration: The Black Freedom Struggle in Escambia County, Florida, 1960-1980.” Dr. J. Michael Butler won the Silver Medal in the awards’ “General Non-Fiction” category.

    Composer Stephen Sondheim’s debut as both composer and lyricist will take the stage this spring at Flagler College, as the Department of Theatre Arts presents a new take on his collaboration with Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart’s “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” from March 8 to March 12.

    Associate Professor Dr. Joe Saviak, of Flagler’s Public Administration program, has recently co-authored a guide titled “Public-Private Partnerships for Library Operations: A Guide for Local Governments” with Dr. Lawrence Martin, a professor at the University of Central Florida.

    Stetson University honors Flagler’s Chancellor Dr. William Proctor

    Dr. William Proctor, former Flagler College president and current chancellor, was recently awarded Stetson’s University’s “Facilitator Award,” created for educators who embody the values and principles articulated in “The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University.” The 1999 book was written by author Robert D. Bickel and Peter Lake, and addresses universities’ responsibilities regarding student safety.
