Flagler College’s Theatre Arts departmental seniors present their capstone production “Almost, Maine” welcoming us to get to know the hard-working, very ordinary Mainers from the mythical small town of Almost. The production runs on November 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and November 18 and 19 at 2 p.m.
“Almost, Maine” takes place on a cold winter night, where residents experience the power of the human heart. The play contains a series of nine loosely connected but complex vignettes about love that extraordinarily fit together. Energized by the northern lights, we witness the beauty of relationships that come full circle as strangers become friends, friends become lovers, and lovers turn into strangers. By the end of the story together, it’s clear that the residents of Almost will never be the same again.
Playwriter of “Almost, Maine,” John Cariani, said he believes it’s the story’s tie to a universal human experience has defined its success and made it one of the most produced plays internationally.
“The reason for its popularity may be its simple approach to exploring a universal human experience,” Cariani told Playbill Magazine. “I think it’s that people really like love stories, and especially fraught love stories that you're not sure are going to work out, and not quite sure it’s going to be okay.”
The Theatre Arts Department senior class is comprised of a talented cast and technical crew excited to showcase their work in this not to be missed production. Since the spring of their junior year, the senior class has worked in collaboration to select the show and assume all creative and technical roles for this student-led production.
“Over the past three years, our class has been fortunate to build a great sense of camaraderie and ensemble,” Student Director of the production Alik Clay said. “We are thrilled to showcase these talents for our families, friends and community.”
This production is free for Flagler students, faculty, and staff and their immediate family; $5 per non-Flagler student ticket, or $15 per general admission ticket. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be provided at the November 16, 7:30 p.m. show.
Flagler's Performing Arts Department production of “Almost, Maine” (fourth revised edition) is presented by arrangement with Dramatist Play Service.
