Professional Profile

Stephanie M. Hohlios specializes in modern and contemporary art in Japan and Asia. Her research examines artistic production in modern and contemporary Japan—from painting and performance to conceptual and community-facing art projects— through lenses of gendered, labor-based, ethnic, and regional belonging. 

Teaching interests include the art of South, Southeast, and East Asia; Buddhist visuality and sacred spaces broadly; early modern circulations; expressions of race, gender, and sexuality (especially in Asia); colonial modernity and postcolonial discourse; ecocriticism; and community-facing art projects.
