The Missing Voices Project

Inspired by theologian Kenda Dean, we understand that all youth—especially those at the margins, long for:

• Intimacy: "Know me." To be truly seen and understood.
• Fidelity: "Be there for me." To experience unwavering support.
• Transcendence: "Move me." To engage in meaningful, transformative experiences

The Missing Voices Project seeks to transform youth ministry by centering the experiences of marginalized young people and the leaders who support them. We believe that when we listen to these overlooked voices, we discover something profound about faith, community, and human connection. We want to help leaders create spaces and experiences where every young person can discover their inherent dignity and divine worth.

What do we mean by 'youth on the margins'?

We are convinced that the dominant model of youth ministry in North America has excluded young people on the margins for whom God cares deeply. We have missed these young people and their voices are missing in our communities of worship. 

We have a few ideas about who this might be, but the beauty of this project is that we help participants discern who has been overlooked in their community, how they can love and serve them, and ultimately be transformed by their presence. Some examples might include:

• Incarcerated youth
• Youth with disabilities
• Teen parents
• Adolescent immigrants
• Homeless youth
• LGBTQIA+  youth
• Who else? Help us figure this out!

By amplifying these missing voices, we hope to help transform not just youth ministry but our understanding of community, faith, and what it means to understand one another deeply. We look forward to sharing more about our projects and partners soon!
