We are pleased to announce a new collaborative initiative between the CEAM Artist Residency at Flagler College and the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington D.C. In March 2022, we will jointly host and welcome to campus Valencia, Spain-based artist, and writer Pablo Vindel as one of our Spring artists-in-residence. Related programs include an artist talk on Monday, March 21 at 3 pm in the Flagler Room, located in the Ponce Building. This event is free and open to the public.

In keeping with the CEAM Artist Residency's commitment to provide support to interdisciplinary artists who collaborate with various aspects of St. Augustine's local community, this new partnership with the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain hopes to connect the Spanish history of the city of St. Augustine with contemporary Spanish art by providing an emerging Spanish artist with the opportunity to connect and explore with the rich cultural ecosystem of St Augustine.

During his residency Vindel will engage with the Flagler and St. Augustine communities, and will collaborate with students, staff, and faculty on campus through class visits and special projects. Additionally, the artist will conduct research for a forthcoming project, and lead a community workshop on artist books.

As an artist and a multilingual writer, Vindel is interested in material processes and the invisible structures that shape them. His practice shifts organically between writing, photography, performance, book, and glass. While each of these materials have their own systems, Vindel is particularly attracted to what he describes as their “syntax of impermanence,” and how they are inexorably linked to our daily lives.

“Use glass as a metaphor for all other media. I am intrigued conceptually by the plasticity of the material and how it functions as a transforming substance. The process always begins with a solid that becomes a fluid—in order to be shaped—only to again solidify. Glass historically has been worked in circular form. It is intimately tied to our everyday, touching our lips and creating vessels around nourishment. Its transparency divides the spaces where we live while at the same time visually unifying them.

Similarly, language must remain in constant movement to be transformed. Its malleability and capacity to reflect us, connects object and language, the word, and our bodies. I see this translation—material or linguistic—as a space of uncertainty, impulse, and loss.”

Pablo Vindel (Spain, 1990) is a visual artist and writer. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions, as well as art fairs, internationally. Most notably these include, the NY Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1, ArtsLibris at ARCOLisboa, Orlando Museum of Art and Lab36|Galeria SENDA (Barcelona). Vindel has completed artist residencies in Brazil, Chile, India, Spain, Turkey, and the US. His work has been published by Naranja Publicaciones and can be found at the MoMA Library Artist Book Collection, Walker Art Center, 10*10 Photobooks and Datz Museum of Art (Gwangjun, South Korea), among others. In 2020, he founded The Liminal, gallery and producer of contemporary art focusing on women and queer artists. He holds an M.F.A. from the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2016), as well as an M.F.A. in Creative Writing - Poetry in the Expanded Field from Stetson University (2018). He currently lives and works in Valencia, Spain.

The Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain through its cultural program SPAIN arts & culture aims to promote Spanish culture in the U.S. through fruitful cultural exchanges among institutions and artists, fostering positive bilateral relations between our two countries.

The Cultural Office Artist-In-Residence program provides artists and scholars from a wide range of disciplines with opportunities to work and collaborate with US institutions and artists to develop new work, exchange ideas, and foster artistic collaborations. More information about their programming can be found at spainculture.us.

The CEAM Artist Residency is generously supported by a grant from the Dr. JoAnn Crisp-Ellert Fund at The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida.
