Flagler's ultimate spring bucket list: 10 must-do activities in and around St. Augustine

Spring is in the air, and there's no better time to explore all the amazing activities and places around Flagler College and St. Augustine.

Whether you're staying local for spring break or looking for fun things to do when you return, we've got you covered. Check out these 10 must-do activities that will make your spring unforgettable: 
 

1. Explore the beauty of Anastasia State Park, Lake Maria Sanchez, and nearby springs 

Discover the natural beauty of Anastasia State Park and Lake Maria Sanchez. Enjoy biking, hiking, bird watching, beach time, and picnicking at Anastasia State Park. Don't miss the Ancient Dunes Nature Trail, a 0.7-mile loop shaded by live oak and red bay trees.  

For a tranquil experience within walking distance from campus, take a peaceful stroll or jog around Lake Maria Sanchez, surrounded by charming historic homes. 

Consider day trips to nearby springs like Ichetucknee Springs State Park for tubing and snorkeling, Silver Glen Springs for swimming and picnicking, and Juniper Springs or Alexander Springs for canoeing and exploring lush surroundings. 
 

2. Paddle along a kayak cruise with FC Rec

Enjoy the beauty of St. Augustine's waterways with a kayak cruise. Join FC Rec for a serene and scenic adventure on April 11 or May 1. This guided kayak cruise will take you through the San Sebastian estuary, offering a chance to observe local wildlife and relax. Closed-toe footwear is required.
 

3. Make waves of impact at a beach cleanup 

Give back to the community by joining a beach cleanup on March 24, April 7, April 15, or April 29. The Love Blue Flagler chapter is dedicated to ocean conservation and organizes regular cleanups to preserve Vilano Beach and St. Augustine Beach. 4. Enjoy a colorful evening at the First Friday Art Walk 

Stroll through St. Augustine's vibrant art scene at the First Friday Art Walk. Held on the first Friday of each month from 5 to 9 p.m., this event features over 25 galleries showcasing traditional and contemporary art. Enjoy live music, meet local artists, and explore exhibits along King, St. George, and Aviles Streets. Don't miss the free shuttle service provided by Old Town Trolley from 6 to 8 p.m. during the event. 
 

5. Catch live tunes at St. Augustine's top music venues 

St. Augustine offers a vibrant live music scene with performances at various venues. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre hosts major concerts, including upcoming shows by Widespread Panic, Wilco, and Dylan Scott.

Colonial Oak Music Park provides a charming outdoor setting with performances by tribute bands and local artists, such as Zoso - The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Tribute and The Motet & Dizgo. For a more intimate experience, head to Cafe Eleven, where you can enjoy a diverse lineup of artists in a cozy atmosphere, including Sounds of Simon & Garfunkel Live Tribute Band, Exhaustra, and Nattali Rize. 
 

6. Cheer on regional sports teams 

Experience the thrill of live sports by attending regional professional or minor-league games. Catch a Jacksonville IceMen hockey game at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. 

For baseball fans, head to Vystar Ballpark to watch the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. This minor-league baseball team provides a fun and affordable outing with themed nights and special events. Soccer enthusiasts can support the Jacksonville Armada FC, a professional soccer team that plays at various venues in the region. There's always something special happening in the world of regional sports! 
 

7. Meet new friends and enjoy spring weather with open play sports 

Get active and have fun with open play sports on campus. Join us for open play tennis at the tennis complex every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. This is open to everyone at all skill levels, and we can provide rackets if needed. Non-marking shoes are required. Campus Rec will also be playing pickleball every Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Commons Green. All skill levels are welcome! Additionally, stop by the beach volleyball court for open play every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. No experience needed—just bring your energy and enthusiasm. 
 

8. Show your school spirit at spring athletics games 

Support fellow Saints by attending spring athletics games. Catch lacrosse, softball, and more as our teams compete this season. Check the Flagler College athletics schedule for game dates and times. Teams with spring competitions include men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, softball, tennis, golf, track and field, and women's volleyball. 
 

9. Encounter wildlife at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Jacksonville Zoo

Take a walk on the wild side by visiting two of the region's top wildlife attractions. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park is home to a wide variety of reptiles, including alligators, crocodiles, and other exotic animals. One of the most thrilling activities here is the Crocodile Crossing zip line, which lets you soar above the alligator exhibits for a unique and exhilarating experience. The Alligator Farm also plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation and education, making it a must-visit for animal lovers. 

For a broader wildlife experience, visit the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. This 73-acre park features over 2,000 animals and 1,000 plants. The botanical gardens are integrated among the animal exhibits, with themed areas like Savanna Blooms and the Gardens at Trout River Plaza. Enjoy views of the Trout River and connect with nature in the Riverview Gardens. 
 

10. Paws and Perks: coffee with animal friends 

Combine your love for coffee and animals at two unique cafes in St. Augustine. Relax with a cup of coffee at Capybara Cafe, where you can enjoy cozy seating and delicious beverages, perfect for study sessions or catching up with friends. Plus, you can encounter capybaras and other animals, supporting wildlife conservation efforts. Alternatively, visit Whitty Whiskers Cat Cafe to enjoy the company of adorable cats while sipping your coffee. The cafe also offers special events like yoga with cats and painting sessions.
