How did your education at Flagler College prepare you for your current career and professional journey?

My education at Flagler College, where I studied International Business, played a key role in preparing me for my current career. The program gave me a strong foundation in understanding global markets, cross-cultural communication, and international trade—skills essential in my role at the German American Chamber of Commerce, where we facilitate business activities between Germany and the US. Of course, learning on the job is always essential, and it's the combination of my college education and real-life experience that helps me to succeed in my career.
What inspired you to move to the New York City metropolitan area (NYC), and how did your journey lead you there?
A combination of personal and professional factors inspired my journey to New York City. My family founded an engineering business here, and moving to NYC was the right decision to support my husband’s endeavors. I was drawn to the endless opportunities of such a vibrant and dynamic city, having never experienced living in a place of this scale before. Professionally, I found an internship at AHK USA-New York, the German American Chamber of Commerce, which allowed me to immerse myself in a unique cross-cultural business environment.
What is your current role, and how has working for the German American Chamber of Commerce in NYC contributed to your professional success?
As a Project Manager of Business Development Consulting at the German American Chamber of Commerce, I manage various market entry projects that support German companies entering the US market. I am responsible for market studies, where we collect and analyze data on potential competition, distribution structures, and sales opportunities to help companies understand how competitive their products or services are in the US. I also lead the business partner matchmaking service, helping connect companies with potential business partners, which is key to successful market entry.

Additionally, I manage our virtual office service, offering German companies a local address in New York to establish a presence in the US with reduced financial risk. Working in NYC has been crucial to my professional growth. The city’s global business hub has given me firsthand insight into cross-cultural business dynamics and an invaluable network that directly enhances my role in helping companies succeed in the US market.
What advice would you give to Flagler students who are considering starting their careers in NYC?

My advice is to explore the city and take advantage of everything it offers—from professional networking and cultural programs to the parks and food scene. But also, take time for yourself, especially if you’re more introverted like me. The city can be overwhelming, and getting caught up in the hustle is easy. Make sure to carve out moments of solitude to recharge; otherwise, you might end up feeling burnt out. Additionally, set your spending priorities and create a budget. If you want to save money, avoid buying coffee and lunches on the go too often—meal prep and bring your own food! I’d also highly recommend living in Hoboken or Jersey City; they’re close to the city but a bit more affordable. Lastly, if you feel lonely, know that many people experience that in such a big city. However, there are plenty of opportunities to connect with others who share your interests.
Can you describe a turning point in your career that was influenced by living and working in NYC?
I started my career in August 2023, so not too long ago. But so far, a turning point in my career was being offered full-time employment just a few months into my internship at the German American Chamber of Commerce (GACC NY). This opportunity validated my skills and adaptability in a new environment, and it gave me the confidence to embrace the challenges and possibilities that come with working in such a dynamic city.
How has living in NYC impacted your ability to build and leverage professional networks?
Living in NYC has significantly enhanced my ability to build and use professional networks. The city offers many chances to connect with people, and my role at GACC NY was crucial in helping me grow.

Supporting German delegations with participants from politics and various industries allowed me to engage with high-level professionals. Also, overseeing the Chamber's business partner matchmaking service for German companies entering the U.S. market taught me how to foster strong, strategic partnerships.
What are some unexpected challenges you faced when you first moved to NYC, and how did you overcome them?

The constant hustle of NYC made it challenging to find downtime, but I learned to prioritize balance in my life. Furthermore, having been a student-athlete in college, I missed being part of a team. Workout sessions with friends became a great way to stay grounded and create a sense of community. At first, making friends wasn’t easy, but I was fortunate to have my partner around, which gave me much-needed support as I adjusted to this new environment.
How do you balance work and personal life in a city as dynamic as NYC?
Balancing work and personal life in a city as dynamic as NYC can be challenging, but I’ve found a few strategies that work for me. I try to set clear boundaries between work and personal life. I find hobbies that bring me joy, like cooking, meeting friends in cafés, and going for walks to recharge. I’m also happy to live in Jersey City, which offers a cozier, slower pace than NYC. It’s a nice contrast and gives me the space to relax. I enjoy staying home, too—I’ve learned that I don’t need to see or do everything. In a city full of endless opportunities, it’s important to accept that it’s simply impossible to experience it all, and that’s okay.
What are your favorite aspects of living in NYC, both professionally and personally?
Professionally, I love how many opportunities there are in NYC. It’s exciting to work in a place with so many talented and driven people, and there are always chances to meet new people and make great connections. Being surrounded by such a fast-paced and innovative environment has helped me grow and stay motivated. I enjoy the energy of the city.

There’s always something new to explore, like quiet parks, cozy cafés, museums, and neighborhoods with their own unique vibe. The variety of food and cultural experiences is amazing. I also love how living in NYC pushes you to grow, step out of your comfort zone, and discover strengths you didn’t know you had. It’s a place that keeps surprising and inspiring me.
How do you stay connected to Flagler College and its community while living in NYC?
I stay connected to Flagler College by following my former golf team’s tournaments and cheering them on from here. It’s always exciting to stay updated on their great progress. I also keep in touch with some of my professors, especially Dr. Woodhouse and Dr. Herrera, which helps me maintain a sense of connection to the college and the community. So far, the Flagler alumni network hasn’t played a direct role in my professional journey in NYC, but I would love to connect with fellow Flagler alumni here.
